Give Nathoo, Mazzola a chance in 17th

No Central Jersey legislative district screams out more loudly for a change in representation than the 17th.

Democratic incumbents Upendra Chivukula and Joseph Egan have been holding down their Assembly posts together since 2002. Both have worked their way into leadership positions of a sort — Chivukula as deputy speaker, Egan as deputy majority leader — and yet have made little mark that would resonate with the public. Egan remains a dual officeholder as he continues to serve as a New Brunswick city councilman, and has never acknowledged any potential conflicts of interest. Chivukula himself held onto a second seat as a Franklin councilman for a time before bowing to public backlash.

Under Corzine Unemployment at the Highest Rate in 26 Years

Unemployment in NJ under Corzine: 9.4%
Unemployment in neighboring states: CT 8%; DE 8.1%; MD 7.2%; NY 8.2%; PA 8.2%
Electing a Republican in November: Priceless

Senator Marcia Karrow, a member of the Senate Labor Committee, issued the following statement regarding the latest unemployment numbers released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

“Once again hard figures have disproven Governor Corzine’s claim that New Jersey is outperforming her neighbors economically. In fact, this state is saddled with the highest unemployment rate in 26 years.

“Every other state in the Mid-Atlantic region has a lower unemployment rate than New Jersey. Adding insult to injury, surrounding states also have lower property taxes, lower income tax rates, lower auto insurance rates and lower costs of living. How Jon Corzine determines that the state is outperforming its neighbors economically is a mystery to the rest of us.

“Eight years of fiscal mismanagement, higher taxes, outrageous spending, record setting borrowing and bureaucratic red tape have brought us to this precipice. The governor will try to explain this data away by pointing to the global recession. The fact remains: New Jersey was in dire financial shape long before the recession hit, and the governor is now trying to pass the buck.”

“Every time in this century we’ve lowered the tax rates across the board, on employment, on saving, investment and risk-taking in this economy, revenues went up, not down.”
